The Woman You Were Five Years Ago Would Be Proud of You

Every now and then, it's worth taking a moment to look back instead of always looking ahead. We're so focused on the next goal, the next promotion, the next version of ourselves that we rarely stop to notice just how much we've already changed. But if you could sit across from the woman you were five years ago, what would she see? Chances are, she'd notice things you've completely overlooked. She'd see someone who's weathered storms she couldn't imagine surviving, made decisions that once felt impossible, and become stronger in ways that don't always show on the outside. She wouldn't be counting the things you haven't accomplished yet; she'd simply be amazed that you kept going.

The truth is, growth rarely happens all at once. It doesn't arrive with a grand announcement or a dramatic transformation. Instead, it sneaks into your life little by little. One day you realize you no longer argue to prove a point. You'd notice that stop chasing people who don't choose you. You'll learn to say no without apologizing for it. You begin protecting your peace instead of constantly explaining yourself. None of these moments seem life-changing on their own, but together they quietly shape the woman you're becoming.

One of the most beautiful parts of getting older is becoming less concerned with what everyone else thinks. The opinions that once kept you awake at night slowly lose their power. You stop comparing your journey to someone else's highlight reel and start appreciating your own pace. You realize that success doesn't have one definition and  happiness doesn't look the same for everyone.

Of course, there are still dreams you're chasing and goals you're working towards. Growth doesn't mean you've arrived; it simply means you're no longer the person who started the journey. There will always be something new to learn, another mountain to climb, another version of yourself waiting on the other side of change. But don't let your future distract you from appreciating your present.

Sometimes we're so busy becoming that we forget to celebrate who we've already become. Every challenge you've faced, every mistake you've made, and every lesson you've learned has helped shape the woman you are today.

So, the next time you feel like you're behind in life, pause for a moment. Think about the woman you were five years ago. Think about her hopes, her fears, the things she used to pray about, and the dreams she carried. Then look at yourself today. You may not have everything figured out, but you've come much further than you realize. The woman you were back then wouldn't expect perfection from you. She'd simply be proud that you kept showing up, kept believing, and kept growing. And maybe that's the reminder we all need from time to time; not to measure our lives by how far we still have to go, but by how incredibly far we've already come.
